Embracing the ‘Fire Element’ of Summer

As summer approaches, with the solstice on June 21st marking the year’s longest day, we are encouraged to embrace the season’s warmth and light. This extended daylight not only boosts our creativity but also highlights the abundance around us.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), summer is associated with the Fire element, representing a peak state of power. Symbolised by the colour red, this phase encourages connection and love, urging us to nurture our inner fire and relationships, and to be open, social, and expressive.
TCM connects the energetic systems of the Heart (Yin) and Small Intestine (Yang) to Fire, along with the Circulation Sex and Triple Warmer meridians. This season invites us to explore how these elements affect our well-being and emotional balance.

The emotions connected to the Fire element are both joy and sadness. When the Fire element is nurtured and in balance, we are more likely to experience passion, joy, and a strong sense of identity. This balance allows us to feel sadness without losing ourselves in it, enabling us to remain engaged with the world while also nurturing our sense of self and confidence.
However, when the Fire element is out of balance, it can manifest in various ways. Some individuals may struggle with feelings of deep sadness or emotional coldness, finding it hard to connect with others or express joy in enjoyable moments. Alternatively, excessive joy can also lead to disharmony, leaving us feeling overwhelmed.
Tips for nurturing your fire element:
- Embrace deep connections—laugh, cry, share and be authentic.
- Try to avoid emotional burnout by managing your energy levels.
- Balance Fire’s intensity with calming water practices such as stillness and peaceful walks by the water.
- Choose light, natural, in-season foods that aid digestion and do not create internal heat.
- Book a Functional Kinesiology session to enhance your energy levels and create balance this summer season.
