ESR for Everyday Life: A Gentle Forehead Touch to Reset Your Emotions

Ever notice how when you feel overwhelmed, you instinctively put your head in your hands? This natural response actually helps your body reduce stress. There’s a gentle technique you can use anytime—for yourself or others—to amplify this effect, called the Emotional Stress Release (ESR) technique.

How It Works:

By gently touching your forehead—just above the eyes, between the eyebrows and the hairline—over the small bumps called the “frontal eminences,” you activate ESR. This stimulates specific reflexes known as neuro-vascular points.

Engaging the front part of the brain helps you see old problems in new ways. ESR supports this by encouraging balance in the forebrain, where you process new ideas, regulate emotions, and make decisions.

How to Practice:

Rest your fingertips (index and middle finger over one eye, thumb over the other) or your whole palm on these points. Bring your awareness to whatever is causing you stress—an emotional concern, memory, or current situation. This helps draw more blood to the front of your brain and away from the areas involved in the ‘fight, flight, freeze, or flee’ response. With this shift, your brain can access creative solutions and new perspectives, rather than reacting from overwhelm.

What to Expect:

While using this technique, you might experience emotional release—crying, deeper breaths, or subtle physical movements. A general sense of lightness and lifting of mental fog. It’s common for people to talk through feelings or share worries about past, present, or future situations.

Safe and Simple:

This self-care habit is gentle and safe to use frequently. Whether you’re facing an interview, exam, emotional block, confrontation, or simply moving through a stressful moment, touching your forehead while thinking about the issue can help you regain calm and tap your creative, problem-solving side.

I frequently use the Emotional Stress Release (ESR) points in my Functional Kinesiology sessions. This simple technique consistently brings a sense of calm and helps release emotional stress. It’s a reliable tool that grounds both my clients and me, especially during challenging moments.
